Cora: (looking at my wedding photos) Mom, I like that one and that one. You know why? Cuz they're of you dancing. I'm a good dancer. I've got good moves.
---
Cora: Lets pretend I'm wearing that dress you have on.
Me: My wedding dress?
Cora: Yup.
Me: Someday you will grow up and if you want to get married you can wear that dress if you want to. You can wear that dress, or you can get a different dress.
Cora: I'll wear that dress when I marry daddy.
Me: You're gonna marry daddy when you grow up?
Cora: Yup. He's a good catch.
My kids seem to indeed say the darnedest things. I would often post these as Facebook statuses but realized that I should be doing something to save these for later. You know, so I can totally embarrass them in their teen years. I hope you enjoy these, but if not... I know I sure will!

On the way home from school today Milly started crying in the car.
Cora: Milly - I need you to stop crying ok? Just trust me ok? Trust me. Just trust me. (to me:) Mom, I'm trusting Milly. I'm trusting her to stop crying.
Me: Well trusting a baby can be tricky because they don't really understand trust.
Cora: Well if she doesn't stop crying then when I get the penguin with the scarf around its neck* at Christmas, then I won't share it with her.
(* This is all she has talked about wanting from Santa. Its a $9 plush seasonal toy from Target. Oh if all future CMases were this easy....)

Someone has been soaking things in at daycare:
Cora: (with hands on hips in her PJs) DAD! You are not listening to my words! This is NOT a joke. Do you understand me? This is not funny, ok?
Ryan: (bewildered) Honey I am listening to you. What did you want to tell me?
Cora: (pauses) Well ... nothin really.

A couple of good ones today:
Cora: (talking to Ryan after school - very sternly) Daddy! Do you really not understand the words I'm saying to you? Shape up!
And then later as we were talking:
Cora: Mom do you wanna marry me? Here sit down and hold my hands and we'll be married.
Me: (looking at her and making a funny face)
Cora: MOM! That is NOT how to be married! First we sit down together, then we watch some TV and then we make silly faces. That's how you be married. That's how it works.

We've been having some windy nights here (and I mean WINDY). And since we all but live in the middle of a huge field (a new development with few neighbors so far) we get the full brunt of the wind's fury. The other night was such a night, and Cora was waking constantly - about every 20-30 mins. Around 11pm I went into her room for the umpteenth time:
Cora: (through tears) Mommy can you make it stop?
Me: No sweetie. Mommies can do a lot of things but the wind is God's domain. Remember how we talked about how he made the trees and the sky and the breezes? But what I can do is say a little prayer to Him for you that the wind will die down.
Cora: (after a pause) God, can you please make the wind be quiet. Thank you. It's Cora.
That was her first spontaneous prayer ever said.

Things said at my house tonight:
Me: Cora, just because I said you could hold it does not mean it's ok to put it in your mouth.
Me: Cora, do not taste something you found on the counter when you do not know what it is. That's dangerous.
Ryan: Cora, can you please... please... please just follow directions?
Me: Cora, that is Milly's baby food honey. You are a big girl - you do NOT need to eat baby food.
Ryan: No, you need to eat at least three more bites before you can get down from the table.
Argh - just get me through the "threes"!

Cora was sitting with her teddy bear on a small leather ottoman we have in our living room. She was cradling her bear, bouncing slightly on the ottoman and rocking. When I asked what she was doing, in a whisper she told me:
Cora: This is how you get babies to sleep!

Catch up!
Ok so I've been slacking lately. No my child has not suddenly gone mute - but between a newborn, a full time job, a family and travel its been all I can do to remember my own name. So here are a few of the good ones that stuck with me:
Cora: Mom - you knucklehead! {after I apparently did something terribly silly}
Two weeks ago we went back to Virginia for my family's annual reunion. This is the first year Cora was really aware of all of what was going on - but yet she was still young enough to be confused. She did NOT like the hotel and couldn't understand each night why we didn't go home. Finally - she sadly asked me while getting ready for bed:
Cora: Mom, do we live here now?
Poor thing~!
My little negotiator tonight while trying to get me to swing candy Orange Slices for her snack:
Cora: Mommy, have I ever steered you wrong?

I often hear Cora talk about her little friends from daycare in different contexts so that is nothing new. However this morning it was the context that took me a little by surprise
Cora: Your [wedding] ring is pretty mom
Me: Thanks honey.
Cora: Can I wear it?
Me: Well, yes, but just for a second ok? This is very special to Mommy.
Cora: [tries it on, then hands it back]
Me: You know someday when you grow up, you will meet a person you really, really like a lot and then that person will give you a ring kinda like this one and you'll get married.
Cora: Someone I like a lot?
Me: Yep
Cora: Like Brady?
Me: [struggling to stay calm] Well do you really, really like Brady?
Cora: Yeahhhhh
Me: Well then yes, maybe you and Brady will get married someday. When you get much, much, much older.

This morning Milly stirred at around 5:30 - a half hour before Daddy gets out of the shower dressed and pressed. So, I brought Milly to bed with me and got to fall back asleep with a precious angel holding my hand tightly.
Then after Daddy came and got Milly, I crept into Cora's room and laid down next to her. Without her opening an eye I heard a soft "I love you mom" from out of the dark.

Me: You did? That's a bummer
Cora: Yeah and then when I was goin to the baf'room I tripped a little.
Me: Wow I'm sorry to hear that!
Cora: I told Mr. Robert "I think I'm havin' a rough day".
Me: And what did Mr. Robert say?
Cora: Nothing. He was just laughin.

Me: Cora, you need to finish all your dinner before you can have ice cream tonight

Me: Nice try.

In honor of our weeks and weeks with no major accidents, I give you - the poop dialogues. These are taken from several days in the past few weeks:
"Mom - there are a LOT of poops in my butt. They need to go for a swim"
"Wow mom lookit all those poops. There's a baby one, a mommy one, a daddy one, a Nana one ...." (this went on through multiple family members)
{grunting} "Mom - its gonna be a big one!"
"Wow poops smell awful mom. Wanna smell?"
"Daddy! Come here, come here - look at my HUGE poop!" (this was yelled through the house)
"Mommy, we don't poop on people huh? That would be really naughty!"
"The poops need to go from my butt, to the back of my butt, then into the toilet huh mom?"

Today was a double feature of fun Cora-isms on the way to 'school'.
First was the comment I was not expecting quite so soon:
Cora: Daddy - will you teach me how to drive your this car?
Ryan: Lets talk about that in a few more years, ok?
And then, Cora requested this:
Cora: Mommy, can we listen to that music we listened to last week [ed note: everything is "last week" - in this case she means yesterday]
Me: Which one honey?
Cora: The one about "three more ice"
Me: {puzzled} Can you sing some for me
Cora: {sings} Three more ice, three more ice
At that point I realize she is talking about our nursery rhymes CD and the song "Three Blind Mice" LOL

We all know it's going to come. That time when something comes out of our kids' mouths that we KNOW we did not put there. That happened for us tonight. Except I wasn't expecting it to be something good. Cora has started a preschool that is located in a church. It's not affiliated with the church and does not advertise itself as a religious preschool - in fact its a fine arts school (whatever that means for 3 year olds). But tonight as I was listening to her talk herself to sleep with her stuffed animals in bed (yes I still tune in on her monitor from time to time) I heard this:
Cora: God is great, God is good, let us thank Him for this food. Aaaaaaamen. Now we can eat our snack!

Darn straight.

Today on the way home from "school" Ryan and I were asking Cora how her day went. She told us she had a good time and chitter chattered away about all her little friends. Then there was a pause for about a minute, which was followed by this:
Cora: Cuz that's how I roll.
I have GOT to cut back on the TV time....

Today for snack time, Cora got a soft peanut butter cookie. I sat her down with her cookie and some water, and went to make myself a cup of coffee. By the time I came back with my coffee, Cora had run through about half of her cookie - taking large chunks and tearing them into small pea-sized pieces. When I asked what she was doing she told me:
Cora: I don't like big cookies - I like them squishy so I have to make all these pieces.
Me: Well why don't you just make some small pieces, eat them, and then make more?
Cora: No. I have to make the whoooole cookie.
Me: Alrighty then.
Cora: I don't like big cookies. Or thunder.
Um... ok.

Cora started Preschool today (while Milly started 1/2 days at daycare as well - big day for mommy!) When Cora got home today I asked her how her day had gone and if she liked the kids there? Her response:

Ever since Milly's arrival, and thus the introduction of breast feeding, Cora has been more focused on "boo boos" as she calls them. Last night as I was tucking Cora in, I asked her - as is our usual custom - what songs she wanted me to sing her. She replied "none". I asked "You don't want any songs at all?" Cora, staring at the ceiling with her thumbs hooked under her armpits simply said "nope". When I asked why, she told me "My boo boos are thinking." ?? "About what," I asked. "About curtains and houses and stuff." Of course. How could I not have known.

As you know this past weekend we went through potty training bootcamp. I am pleased to report that as of Saturday morning we have had NO accidents. That is almost a full week of no accidents. Way to go Cora. However potty training is not just about going in the potty. Its also teaching good hygiene like washing hands after and how to wipe effectively. Apparently we have a little work to do there since yesterday Cora proudly announced to me from the bathroom:
"Mommy, my big girl panties have a stain on them. A brown one. Come see it! Come see!"
Looks like we may have some refining to do....

This weekend we are going through "Potty training boot camp" with Cora since she starts preschool in two weeks. So, since Friday we have been going through accidents, celebrations, and rushing to the nearest potty. This morning, while making muffins, Cora started having "the poopy face" so I told her we should hurry to the toilet. I rushed her in and told her to hurry, hurry and take down her pants. Without missing a beat, and while following my command, she told me:
"Slow your roll mom. Slow your roll. We're not in a big hurry here."
Seriously?

With the arrival of Milly I was worried that Cora would have some severe sibling rivalry issues. I needn't have worried as she's been as sweet as can be to her little sis. Last night Milly was having a rough time getting to sleep for her 7:00pm "nap". I was rocking her in the bassinet and Cora came over, stuck her head in between me and Milly, rubbed her sister's tummy and said:
"Its ok Milly. Its ok sweetie. Mommy and Cora are here. You don't have to be lonely!"
Awwwwww.

Ok yes, its been a while but in my defense I DID deliver a child on April 9th! :) To celebrate, a Coraism related to having a new baby sister in the house:
Cora: Mom, the baby woke me up last night. She was cryin
Me: Yeah, babies do that. Their tummies are so tiny they have to eat all the time - even late, late at night. So they cry to let us know they're hungry.
Cora: (with a sigh and smile) She's a mess isn't she mom?

Putting Cora to bed tonight, this was our conversation:
Me: You know your baby sister is going to come out of mommy's tummy very soon
Cora: Is she sleeping in your tummy?
Me: Yes, right now she's resting
Cora: Let me feel (feels my tummy, then leans in and kisses it)
Me: You are a very sweet girl and you are going to make a wonderful big sister
Cora: Thanks mom
Me: I want you to know that when baby comes things might seem a little crazy for a while, but I will always love you just as much as I do right now. I love you my baby.
Cora: I love you too mommy (takes my face in both hands and gives me a kiss on the cheek)
Me: I'm so happy you are my daughter
Cora: I'm happy you are my mommy.
These are the moments I live for. These are the moments I hope and pray that the camera in my head captured and saved so that I can replay them over and over as long as I live.

The daughter (Lisa) of Cora's daycare provider (Linda) got married a few weeks ago (to a man also named Ryan), and apparently the topic has come up at daycare. This morning the following conversation ensued:
Cora: Last week Linda and Lisa and Ryan got married
Me: They did?
Cora: Yes, and then they 'schanged kisses
Me: Yup, that's what you do when you get married. You give each other kisses.
Cora: Mommy when we get married, we'll do kisses like this (gave me a smooch)
*pauses for a second, lays back and starts to pick her nose*
Cora: Then we'll pick our noses, ok?
Me: Sounds like marriage to me!

Cora: I don't like donkeys
Me (to Ryan): Apparently our daughter is a Republican
Ryan (to Cora): Do you like Elephants?
Cora: Yeah, but sometimes they can poop on you.
Sounds about right.

While we have a 3-stall garage, our driveway narrows to a "Y" about 10 feet from the street (a very odd and much hated neighborhood covenant). Ryan does not love it when I accidentally go onto the grass when trying to get into my spot - the first stall on the right (which necessitates some fancy dancing with a full size SUV). Upon coming home last night, our visiting relatives had parked in the driveway, so to get to my garage I had to drive off onto the grass much to Ryan's dismay. So last night as I rocked with a sleepy Cora, this is what I got:
Cora: Mommy you were naughty and drove on the grasses.
Me: Well Daddy was just teasing when he said mommy was naughty.
Cora: But you're not supposed to drive on the grasses.
Me: (sigh) Yes, that's true, you're right. I should not drive on the grasses and I told Daddy I was sorry.
Cora: And he said "Its ok accidents happen?"
Me: Something like that, yes.
Cora: And you'll never do it again, right mommy?
Me: I'll never do it again.
Cora: You promise?
Me: I promise.
Cora: Is that the truth mommy?
Me: That's the truth.
Cora: Got it. Ok mommy.

We're doing the new baby's nursery in a Paris theme. Those of you that know me know its long been my dream to visit. Cora and I were sitting in the new baby's room this weekend and she pointed to some wooden block letters spelling out the city of lights:
Cora: What dat say mommy?
Me: That says Paris
Cora: What a Paris for?
Me: Paris is a beautiful city we'll visit someday.
Cora: (excited) Can we go now mommy?
Me: No, its very, very far away. We'd have to get on an airplane and fly for a long time to get to Paris. We'll have to plan a trip to Paris someday but we won't be able to go anytime really soon, ok?
Cora: (sigh) Mommy, we're not never gonna get to go to Paris.
Me: I know how you feel honey.
Cora: What dat say mommy?
Me: That says Paris
Cora: What a Paris for?

Sometimes not all memorable conversations are happy ones. The "paci fairy" came to our house this past Friday. We'd been doing really well understanding that the fairy took Cora's paci's to a new little baby who didn't have any and left her Bibs (a stuffed kitty cat) and Jazzy (a pink stuffed pony with a sparkly halter) instead. But, on this, the 4th night, the reality sunk in when Daddy went to kiss a little girl goodnight.
Cora: Daddy, I wanna go home
Ryan: Honey you are home.
Cora: No I mean home, home.
Ryan: Honey this is home, home. This is where we live.
Cora: Can I have a drink?
Ryan: Honey you already had your bedtime drink with mommy. Its time for bed.
Cora: (getting teary eyed) I want my paci
Ryan: Oh but honey the paci fairy took all our pacis remember? And she left your really cool kitty and horsie.
Cora: I don't want them. I want the fairy to come take them back and bring me my paci.
Ryan: But you're a big girl now and you're so very good at being a big girl!
Cora: (tears) I don't want to be a big girl daddy.

We're taking the slow boat to China approach to potty training since we've heard so many little ones regress once a new baby gets here. But lately Cora has been motivated so we've been going with it. Tonight I got this:
Cora: Mommy - can you wait outside so that I can have my privacies please?

The paci fairy came yesterday so tonight was night two sans pacifier (or if you're Cora, "facifier") so drifting off to bed is taking a little more time than usual. After going up there to tell her she needed to quiet down and concentrate on sleeping (instead of singing or playing with her animals) this was our convo:
Cora: I have an owie Mommy
Me: Where honey?
Cora: On my hand.
Me: *kisses little hand*
Cora: I have an owie on my butt too
Me: (trying not to laugh) Well mommy is not gonna kiss your butt right now
Cora: Can you put some butter on it?
Me: Put butter on your butt??
Cora: Yeah.
Me: Well lets think about that for tomorrow morning - its night night time right now
The only thing I can think of is that she confused "butt paste" with "butter" :D

Cora loves to play outside in the snow, so after her nap, Daddy told her they could go play outside. He got her a snack and then started to get his coat on, etc. After a few minutes of waiting for her to finish this was how things went down:
Ryan: Cora, don't you want to go play outside in the snow?
Cora (matter of factly): Daddy - of course I do. But right now I'm going to sit down and eat my snack.
Daddy's can be so impatient when they want something! Humph.

On the way into work, we always drive over a river that is currently somewhere between water and ice. Cora is fascinated with the process so this morning these were her observations:
Cora: Mommy is that water turning into ice?
Me: Yes it is - or its trying to.
Cora: Where did all the gooses go Mommy?
Me: They went somewhere warmer for the winter
Cora: I wanna go wif them.
Me: Amen sister! Mommy does too!
Cora: Daddy, lets go somewhere warmer ok?
Ryan: Um, well we'll think about that
Me (to Ryan): And I didn't even bribe her!

Cora made out like a candy bandit on V-day (as would be expected). One of the things she really loved was a small heart-shaped, fuzzy pillow she got from her grandma. She carried it around with her for a while, but then when she realized that Mommy did not have any big V-day haul like she did, handed it to me and said: "Happy Balentimes Day Mommy. You can have dis. I love you." That was all the 'present' I needed!

Today Cora and I dropped Daddy off at the airport for his annual snowboarding trip with his college buddies. This was the first year Cora really understood Daddy was going away for a while and she cried pretty hard a good part of the way home. Luckily MeMe came over this evening to cheer her up.
However, after I put her to bed, I went back downstairs and was just settling into American Idol when I heard this on the monitor:
Cora: Mommy, can you come here please? I think I'm having a hard day.
Mommy hightailed it upstairs and sat with a certain little someone singing soft lullabies until she sleepily told me she was "feeling very better" and it was ok to leave.

Cora was sitting watching Land Before Time (her latest obsession) while Ryan was putting together our new TV console table. He had gotten through most of it and was just nailing on the back when, during a break between nails he heard:
Cora: Daddy, can you please stop pounding that so I can hear my movie?
(she is her grandfather's descendant)

Oh Iowa winters....
(on the way home today)
Cora: Mommy I'm looking at the snow
Me: There's a lot of it to look at
Cora: I think its pretty
Me: Yeah I think so too but I'd sure like to see some Sunshine!
Cora: *yelling* Hey! Sun! Come out here RIGHT NOW. Mommy wants to see you!
You tell em sister.

Cora went off to find her dad upstairs (who was doing some laundry) and once she found him gave him a few options about his next steps:
Cora: Daddy, you can come downstairs with me, or you can still do laundry, or you can go pee pee on the toilet, or you can go in baby's room and take a nap, or you can go in my room and fix somethin' or you can come downstairs with me. Those are your choices, ok?

Today, I finally sat down for lunch after being up and about getting everyone's food on the table. As we were all eating Cora, out of the blue says...
Cora: Mommy, I found a crunchy today.
Me: That's nice honey. What did you do with it?
Cora: I put it in your water.
Me to Ryan: Please look
Ryan: *looks* Let me just get you a new glass of water.
Oh ... in our house "nose goblins" are "crunchies".

Cora requested hot chocolate on the way home from daycare today. Alllll the way home. So, once home I got her some cocoa ready. While I was prepping her beverage she engaged in a recent favorite game; namely grabbing the dog's favorite chew toy and running amok in the house with him following behind.
After a few minutes of waiting for one or both of them to wear out, I told Cora "Your hot chocolate is getting cold, you'd better come drink it". To which she replied (as she ran by) "Playyyying mommmm.... playyyyying here..... can't have chocolate." The busy life of a multitasking toddler.

At our house the rule for Cora is no TV/movies during mealtimes. Tonight we made an exception - for daddy. The Vikings/Saints playoffs were on. However, after daddy leaned around one too many times to check the score or recent play Cora informed him:
"Daddy - its time to turn off your movie now and eat you dinner." Busted.

*In the car as we're driving home from running errands*
Cora: Mommy, we don't eat houses.
Me: (slightly puzzled) That's right, we don't.
Cora: If we did, we would get sick and have to go to the doctor, and then the doctor would look at our throat and say 'You very sick' and we'd have to get medicine and if we were good we'd get a Handy Manny sticker.
Me: I think all of that sounds about right.
Cora: So that's why we don't eat houses.
Me: Ok
Cora: You got it mom? We don't eat houses.
Me: Got it. Thanks.

Cora to Ryan after dinner: Daddy, can you do me a favor?
Ryan: Sure honey, what do you need?
Cora: Can you pick up all my toys? Ok? Thanks. (toddles off).

Oldies But Goodies
Me after Cora got out of the bath: Honey do you need some lotion?
Cora: No, I just need some chocolate
---------------------------------------
Ryan: *angry noises after someone pulled out in front of him*
Cora: Don't get frustrated Daddy. Just keep trying, ok?
---------------------------------------
Me: *trying to tickle Cora while she is firmly engrossed in the movie "G-Force"*
Cora: Settle down mommy, just settle down. Settle down.
---------------------------------------
Summit: *licks Cora's hands after I let her have one last bite of cookie dough*
Cora: Summit! You ate the.last.chocolate from my hands. GO TO YOUR PILLOW!
---------------------------------------
Me: *sitting addressing our New Year's Cards*
Cora: What are you doing mommy?
Me: I'm writing on these notes
Cora: Oh are you doing some paperwork? Ok.
(Who the heck taught her about "paperwork"??)
----------------------------------------
Cora: *crying*
Me: What Happened?
Cora: I hurt my foot
Me: Well come let me see it
Cora: (through tears) You prob'ly gotta be a doctor.
(Well fine.)
-----------------------------------------
When I asked Cora (while we were playing) if she had a dirty diaper she did not even break her stride by simply saying "Nope. You wanna smell?" while backing up to me. I think Ryan almost peed his pants laughing.

Why Are We Here
A very fair question for you to ask. The answer is simple... humor, joy, fun and my simple pride as a mom. My kid seems to indeed say the darnedest things. I would often post these as Facebook statuses but realized that I should be doing something to save these for later. You know, so I can totally embarrass her in her teen years.
So - I hope you enjoy these, but if not... I know I sure will!
