11-16-10

Someone has been soaking things in at daycare:

Cora: (with hands on hips in her PJs) DAD!  You are not listening to my words!  This is NOT a joke.  Do you understand me?  This is not funny, ok?
Ryan: (bewildered) Honey I am listening to you.  What did you want to tell me?
Cora: (pauses) Well ...  nothin really.

11-02-10

A couple of good ones today:

Cora: (talking to Ryan after school - very sternly)  Daddy!  Do you really not understand the words I'm saying to you?  Shape up!

And then later as we were talking:
Cora:  Mom do you wanna marry me?  Here sit down and hold my hands and we'll be married.
Me:  (looking at her and making a funny face)
Cora:  MOM!  That is NOT how to be married!  First we sit down together, then we watch some TV and then we make silly faces.  That's how you be married.  That's how it works.

10-30-10

We've been having some windy nights here (and I mean WINDY).  And since we all but live in the middle of a huge field (a new development with few neighbors so far) we get the full brunt of the wind's fury.  The other night was such a night, and Cora was waking constantly - about every 20-30 mins.  Around 11pm I went into her room for the umpteenth time:

Cora:  (through tears) Mommy can you make it stop?
Me:  No sweetie.  Mommies can do a lot of things but the wind is God's domain.  Remember how we talked about how he made the trees and the sky and the breezes?  But what I can do is say a little prayer to Him for you that the wind will die down.
Cora:  (after a pause) God, can you please make the wind be quiet.  Thank you.  It's Cora.

That was her first spontaneous prayer ever said.

10-18-10

Cora:  Mom, I love Milly.  We're married.  You get married to the person you love the best and that's Milly.  You're married to Dad and I'm married to Milly and we can all hang out like married people.

Cora:  Mom I love Milly.  I love that little face.

10-5-10

Things said at my house tonight:

Me:  Cora, just because I said you could hold it does not mean it's ok to put it in your mouth.

Me:  Cora, do not taste something you found on the counter when you do not know what it is.  That's dangerous.

Ryan:  Cora, can you please... please... please just follow directions?

Me:  Cora, that is Milly's baby food honey.  You are a big girl - you do NOT need to eat baby food.

Ryan:  No, you need to eat at least three more bites before you can get down from the table.

Argh - just get me through the "threes"!

10-3-10

Cora was sitting with her teddy bear on a small leather ottoman we have in our living room.  She was cradling her bear, bouncing slightly on the ottoman and rocking.  When I asked what she was doing, in a whisper she told me:

Cora:  This is how you get babies to sleep!
